BMW cooling systems work hard. The engine runs at controlled temperatures for efficiency and performance, so the radiator, water pump, thermostat, hoses, expansion tank, and cooling fans all need to do their jobs correctly. When one part starts failing, the first clue can be a small coolant warning or a faint smell after driving. Other times, the temperature rises quickly, leaving you little time to react. At our shop, we take cooling-system complaints seriously because repeated overheating can damage cylinder heads, gaskets, and other expensive engine parts. 1. Electric Water Pump Failure Can Stop Coolant Flow Many modern BMW engines use an electric water pump rather than a traditional belt-driven pump.
